We’re pleased to provide this great hands-on program for learning bicycle maintenance and repair. Taught by the man, Joey Mesa, we’ve developed our class around a curriculum designed by the Park Tool Company, the world’s largest bicycle-tool manufacturer.

Class size is limited and advanced registration is recommended. Email us at Marty@schlegelbicycles.com to reserve your spot for one of our future classes. Schedules will be posted here once finalized.

Our bike repair classes are taught by our technicians, who are experts in repairing and maintaining bicycles. You’ll learn the best ways to care for and fix problems on your road and mountain bikes using pro tools and procedures.

We suggest purchasing Park Tool’s Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair. (It acts as the class outline.) The Big Blue Book uses color photos and instructions to clearly explain the topics covered in our class and more than 100 various repairs and maintenance tasks including servicing bearing assemblies, wheels, braking and shifting systems, adjusting components and more!

You’ll learn a lot about bikes at our Park Tools School and have a great time, too.

PTS: Novice Bicycle Maintenance ClassStudents get an overview of many aspects of bicycles maintenance. Tires and tubes, brakes and gear adjustments are demonstrated, discussed and worked on by the students. The class content is similar to a 90 day check-up on the bike.  This is an excellent class for someone with a relatively modern or brand new bike who wishes to learn about maintenance, but can only make a limited time commitment for the class.  In the novice class, the emphasis is placed on knowing when there is a problem and on cleaning the bike.  The presentations will often be descriptive.  For example, showing what rear cogs are and how they work is part of the class, but demonstrating or practicing their removal is beyond the scope of this class.

This is about a 3 to 4 hour class. Cost for the novice class is $40.00 per person.  Class is typically held on a monthly basis.

2011-2012 Schedule:
Saturday, December 17th – 2pm
Saturday, January 14th – 2pm
Saturday, February 11th – 2pm

pts: Intermediate Bicycle Maintenance Class The class content will be similar to a basic shop tune-up.  Emphasis will be placed on adjustments, but components will not be pulled completely apart.  This class might be an option for someone who has tried some basic repairs. The student should have some familiarity with the topics presented, but may not necessarily have the experience. Participants with limited bike knowledge might consider the novice class before taking the intermediate course.

The intermediate class is about a 6 to 8 hour course.  This course will be broken down into two classes.  Cost for the intermediate class is $90.00. This class is typically held bimonthly.

2011-2012 Schedule:
Part I: Saturday, January 28th – 2pm
Part II: Saturday, February 4th – 2pm

pts: Advanced Maintenance ClassStudents will basically overhaul the bicycle.  For example, hubs and headset will be pulled apart. You should expect some troubleshooting in this class. It will be impossible to anticipate all the mechanical problems you will run into. This class might attract someone who is always asking questions of the shop staff.  They may own several bikes or service their family and friends’ bikes. This person probably enjoys working with his or her hands.

The advanced level course will be about 12 hours long for group sessions or about 6 hours for private sessions. Group sessions are typically held one to two times per year. Course will be broken down into two days, typically scheduled on Saturdays. Cost of the advanced class is $200.00 per person for group sessions or $250.00 per person for private (small groups limited to 4). *To reserve a private session, please email or call the store for available dates and times.

Park’s Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair retails for $24.99. It is authored by C. Calvin Jones, a world-renowned bicycle mechanic. It is one of the most up-to-date resources available and it contains information on all of the latest technologies and components.

Private individual/group lessons only.

*Maximum class size limited to 10.  We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule classes based upon participation or weather.
